Reidy exposes the pharma sales sector to be a profit-driven manipulative environment, and that doesnt surprise me. Youll find yourself rooting for reidy and at the same time, youll be shocked by the realities of the world that paid his salary. The accounts mentioned in the book are most definitely accurate in terms of what has happened in the realm of pharmaceutical marketing.
But here is where things start to fall apart you see, our hero, jake gyllenhaal, is a salesman at an electronics store and boy oh boy what a salesman he is. Can you just imagine? Being a salesman in chicago? It is called the dream and we all have it. One day, in his attempt to sell more drugs than the evil pharmaceutical rep (i am not joking, this movie has a villain who is basically just another pharmaceutical rep? And his name, obviously, is trey hannigan) jake gyllenhaal gives hank azaria a thousand dollars to let him walk around his office with him wearing a doctors coat.
I wonder if this author couldnt have made the book interesting by taking himself out of the story, doing additional research into drug reps, and giving us something informational? I skimmed the first 30 pages - who cares about the conversation with your parents? Then skimmed the next 30 (beers and babes while training), then skimmed the next 50 pages, then quit. But instead, he drives his porsche alongside anne hathaways drug bus to canada and tells her that he wants to carry her when she cant walk anymore, which in a normal movie like this would be a charming way for someone to tell another person that they will never let them go, but in this movie it literally means he will carry her because she cannot walk anymore because parkinsons. It said it was based on the movie love & other drugs and if i hadnt had a chance to watch the movie i love to read the book first.
You should have been there, when the viagra was flowing and ohio was nothing but wall-to-wall lingerie models and architecturally avant garde mansions. Reidys second book bachelor 101 cooking cleaning closing is a cookbooklifestyle guide for single guys. Huh? So anne hathway goes across the street to what is purportedly an alternate medical conference, but really it is just a support group (in the middle of the day) for people with parkinsons.
It turns out he is almost as good at fucking everyone as he is at selling electronics that dont exist yet! (very good. Jamie reidy seems like hes probably a nice enough guy, but you can tell he thinks (earnestly) that hes a much more hilarious and amazing writer than he is. Here are a few of the ways in which this movie makes no sense -when jake gyllenhaal first starts trying to sell drugs to doctors the movie pretends like pfizer is some kind of start-up company that no one has ever heard of, as opposed to one of the largest and richest pan-national corporations in the world.
But we also all know what work is like, and it can be very hard in a movie-type-situation to really get on board with a highly-paid corporate cogs desire to be an even more highly-paid corporate cog in a somewhat bigger city. From my understanding, love & other drugs (the movie with anne hathaway and jake gyllenhaal) was based off this book. So, anne hathaways parkinsons gets worse, and jake gyllenhaal starts getting nervous about what a long-term relationship with a very sick woman would be like, and he starts using his connections in the medical community to try and cure her even though there is no cure and he does this by doling out viagra samples but nevertheless. Love and other drugs she believes both have done nudity with a tremendous amount of sensitivity and dignity. With equal parts self-confidence and self-mockery, reidy tells it like it is in the drug-selling trenches that are our local doctors offices.
It is important to put food on our families, and theres nothing better than the pride of a hard days work and the security of a real career. Hard sel jamie reidy is to the pharmaceutical business what jerry maguire was to professional sports and frank abagnale (catch me if you can) was to bank fraud. Now, as we have all learned from writers like david sedaris and and james frey, people often exaggerate their actual experiences in order to make their memoirs more entertaining. There were many events i could relate with in what was formerly known as big pharma that were true and comical at times. Not a good enough reason! Also, uh, i am pretty sure it was never like this.
Reader be advised though, the drug industry has made honest efforts to reform and eliminate the unethical practices that are described in the book. They could have come up with a great comedy for the history books, a la the hangover. The best part of the book may be the epilogue where he discusses his quitting pfizer, severance negotiations with lilly, and familys interactions. It is almost as if this movie is too good, you know? Jake gyllenhaal lands the chicago job. Enjoyed the first half, the second half was kind of slow until the end where it really picked up, then abruptly ende it was entertaining, an interesting story, good insight into salesman university.
Hard sell is a witty exposa(c) of an industry that touches nearly everyone in contemporary america. Jamie reidy seems like hes probably a nice enough guy, but you can tell he thinks (earnestly) that hes a much more hilarious and amazing writer than he is. Ultimately, it was in large party my ethical incompatibility that drove me from the pharma industry, so i was curious to see what jamie reidy had to say. Also, as someone who has worked in sales, it hard sell is one interesting book and kind of a fascinating study. While i enjoyed some of the stories hes presented, i dont find anything extremely amazing about this book. Im not saying this is impossible, but even doctor hank azaria, right before we are introduced to anne hathaway, says this chart cant be right, why does a 26-year-old need parkinsons medication? Like, even the movie itself sets this up as not a particularly believable situation. When they had a whole closet full of samples! Plus, the look into my childhood friends grown up life, was interesting. Z lektury czytelnik moe si dowiedzie w jaki sposb przedstawiciele handlowi przechodzili pranie mzgu w trakcie pierwszego, szeciotygodniowego szkolenia. What? Huh? What? Meanwhile, jake gyllenhaal is tired of selling anti-depressant medication, he wants a shot at selling this new boner drug called viagra. The only problem i had with him reidy exposes the pharma sales sector to be a profit-driven manipulative environment, and that doesnt surprise me.Jul 18, 2011 ... ... is actually based on a memoir called Hard Sell: the Evolution of a Viagra Salesman. ...
